PUP PYLON
Catwalk
Lagoon

Kaya noong 1965 through Pres. Diosdado Macapagal’s proclamation, the Pandacan site of the Bureau of Animal Industry was reserved for PCC’s use (now PUP).
PUP! Tanglaw ng Bayan!!!

Additional info about Mabini Shrine:
Apolinario Mabini Shrine Pandacan
The Brains of the Revolution Apolinario Mabini, the Revolution’s political philosopher, proved that illness was no
hindrance to greatness. In 1896, Mabini’s was struck down by polio; the disease paralyzed both his legs. In illness
Mabini’s mind became even sharper. With the Spanish-American War looming on the horizon, he wrote a manifesto
warning Filipinos not to trust the Americans. The document made its way to Hong Kong, into the hands of the exiled
leaders of the 1896 revolution. General Emilio Aguinaldo sent for Mabini, who at first meeting disappointed him. What
was he supposed to do with this cripple? But when Mabini spoke, Aguinaldo saw his worth. From then on, Mabini was
installed as Aguinaldo’s adviser, earning for himself the accolade “Brains of the Revolution.”A Nipa Hut by the Pasig At
the outbreak of the Filipino-American War in 1899, Mabini was captured by the Americans and was imprisoned for almost
two years. Upon his release, he wrote patriotic articles for the local papers. Angered, the Americans exiled him to Guam.
Fearing he would never see the Philippines again, Mabini reluctantly took an oath of allegiance to the United States that
allowed him to come home in February 1903. On May 13, 1903 he died of cholera at the age of 39. The Mabini Shrine
Pandacan’s bamboo and nipa house belonged to the del Rosario family to whom Mabini was related by affinity. (His
younger brother married a del Rosario daughter.) Mabini first lived in this house in 1888, the year he entered law school.
He continued to live there during most of his adult years. The original house used to be located across the river. It was
moved to its present location in 1963 to give way to the widening of the Nagtahan (now Mabini) Bridge. Only a few items
in the house belong to Mabini: a long bench, a portrait painted when he was a young man, his transcription of “Florante
at Laura” by Francisco Baltazar, and a wooden wreath sculpted by a friend from Paete, Laguna. Replicas of his other
possessions are also on display, among which is his convalescent chair. The artworks are winning entries of a painting
competition held in 1964 in commemoration of Mabini’s 100lh birth anniversary. Opposite the house is another nipa hut,
a replica of the house in Tanauan, Batangas, where Mabini was born.

RELOCATION OF MABINI SHRINE TO PUP
Mabini Shrine moving to school
THE Metro Manila Development Authority has begun relocating the Mabini Shrine from Malacañang Park in Pandacan to its new site at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines also along the Pasig river.
Baltazar Melgar, chief of the Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office, said the agency’s workers hired under the Trabaho, Trabaho program have been ordered to clean up the 1,479-sqm vacant lot in the campus which is upstream from Nagtahan Bridge.
He also ordered the removal of grass and bushes, balling of trees and and part of the native house whose replica used to draw visitors who wished to pay tribute to the hero.
Melgar said the agency was coordinating with National Historical Institute director Ludovico Badoy to ensure the shrine is ready to be unveiled next month.
“By December this year, the 172-sqm Mabini house replica will rise in all its glory in its new home for public viewing.”
He said a huge playground for children would be put up near the shrine.
According to MMDA assistant executive director Eduardo Franco, while the institute is providing the direction and design on how to properly restore the shrine in its new location, PUP president Dr. Dante Guevarra has graciously offered a portion of the university for the humble abode of Apolinario Mabini, the Sublime Paralytic, who was also acknowledged as the Brains of the Revolution during the American colonial occupation.
The agency initiated the relocation in a bid to reduce the flooding problem in Metro Manila, particularly in the cities of Marikina, San Juan and Pasig.
Melgar said the shrine had encroached on the reclaimed portion of Pasig River for decades and had constricted the flow of water coming from creeks and other waterways in Manila and Quezon City. Rio Araja

MABINI SHRINE NOW IN PUP!
The Mabini Shrine: Sanctuary of the Spirit
Dr. Dante Guevarra
PUP President
7/20/2008
If history has lesson to tell, it is the realization that the monuments and other creations of man which have survived the vicissitudes of time were built as sanctuaries of the human spirit.
History also tells us that these creations, from ancient times to present, remind us that the flowering of ideas and culture has also served to stimulate the political, economic and social destiny of a nation.
It is therefore appropriate that the Apolinario Mabini Shrine should find its resting place in the heart of PUP’s main Manila Campus which is also aptly named the Mabini Campus. Both the university and the Mabini Shrine stand where the landmarks of our history unravel like a colorful tapestry: Pasig River snaking through Muslim settlements before emptying into Manila Bay, where sailed the Spanish armadas bearing the sword and the cross; where the junks of Limahong and Dutch warships also tested the Philippine waters for possible occupation; where the brooding silhouettes of Bataan and Corregidor whose fall to the Japanese occupation forces and the subsequent liberation of the Philippines by America remind us how Manila became the second most devastated city of World War II, next to Warsaw.
It is only proper that the modest, if not handsome, house of Apolinario Mabini, the “Brains of the Revolution” finds its place in PUP.
Mabini fought for his country at a crucial stage of our history that includes, in later stages, the propaganda movement and the Proletarian Revolution against Spain; the Philippine-American war, then the formative years under the Philippine Commonwealth.
All throughout, Mabini remained a steadfast Filipino, faithful to the revolutionary trinity of Kataastaasang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan. He mirrored his country’s thoughts and aspirations for a free and sovereign republic that rested, in his Malolos Constitution that inspired a moral order far beyond and deeper than the ephemeral accident of history.
With the Mabini Shrine, PUP seeks to reclaim from the living past, the contributions and virtues of the Sublime Paralytic and his fellow patriots who have made our national community possible.
